Felicitas Drobig, osu is an Ursuline of Prelate (Roman Catholic Sister) and an art therapist.

Felicitas was well into her thirties before making her first forays into art through photography. While majoring in psychology at the University of Saskatchewan, Felicitas explored various media, being drawn especially to sculptural welding and soapstone carving. A love for abstract painting came after that.

Felicitas’ interest in the arts and her wish to help people eventually led her into the field of art therapy. Her first day at the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute in Nelson, BC, felt like coming home. Felicitas graduated from the Institute in 2007 and since then has had her private art therapy practice in Saskatoon, (Art’iculate Art Therapy Services). She works with individual clients, both adults and children, but she has also given workshops for various church and professional groups and is a regular presenter at Queen’s House of Retreats.

As a trained spiritual director, Felicitas’ special passion is exploring art, faith, and spirituality. A professional art-therapist since 2018 and a clinical-counsellor, I have been practicing in mental-health for families, children and youth since May 2018, while beginning training in Sept 2016. I specialized in individual adult and young-adult art-psychotherapy during training and see such cases during my spare-time. I work with mild to severe concerns and love supporting others towards their healing (can’t imagine any other vocation).

I have consistently found disconnection in relationships leading to unmet needs, or in relation to ourselves, at the heart of many mental-health concerns. Being primarily person-centered, I have a warm, accepting, genuine, congruent transparency and open-ness in sessions. I also believe in accountability to circumstantial-dilemmas or wounded-ness.

Personal experiences of loss and trauma has deepened my empathy for others and helped me understand this territory from the inside-out. I’ve been described as gentle, humorous, insightful, perceptive, empathic, kind, imaginative, patient and intuitive. I often see how an unresolved past is alive in the present for my clients, shaping their relationships, feelings, choices and circumstances. As within, so without.

However, I do not solely focus on the past and believe in people having (and being able to cultivate) a freedom of choice. I believe in supporting clients to find their own path towards healing, as they ultimately hold their own best-answer. In this manner, I support self-determination. Still, in therapy it is our commitment to work on your benefit together is key to a successful outcome, and I hope that it is also the right time for you. Therapy works!

I offer a strengths-based, non-pathologizing approach. I believe problems are created by insecure attachments and maintained by the unhealthy relationships which subsequently develop.

I hold a strong conviction that working collaboratively empowers those who need to be seen, heard and validated. I believe the person-centred core conditions of empathy, non-judgmental warmth and congruence facilitate change and Systemic theory informs me of the wider context of client issues.

I integrate Internal Family Systems theory into my Art Therapy practice, holding the belief that we are made up of parts and that problems occur when the internal system is in conflict. Cognitive behavioural theory influences my understanding of how beliefs are formed and maintained. I concur with neurobiological evidence that trauma is held in the body and that the neuroplasticity of the brain means creating new neural pathways through positive attachments is possible.

I believe that connection and compassion facilitate growth and healing. I am intent on holding hope and offering empowerment in addressing the impact of the past on the present.

I am mother of four and have worked in various roles within the care profession for the past 30 years, including as a senior residential social worker in a therapeutic unit for severely abused children.

Candace is a recent graduate of the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute in Nelson, BC. She holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1972), a diploma in Whole-body Focusing-Oriented Therapy from the International Focusing Institute, NY (2010) and since 2000 has studied Process-Oriented Psychology (Process Work Institute, Portland, OR).

She had a 30-year career as an art conservator; foundational to the discipline is the preservation of valued qualities through risk assessment and mitigation. For over 15 years she was a volunteer facilitator of Restorative Justice sessions, some of which were highly polarised.

Candace’s approach is person-centered, and trauma informed. She believes that humans have purpose, value, dignity, the capacity for self-direction, and an inherent impulse toward growth. Her facilitation style invites engagement with, and integration of, the body-mind by combining image making with body movement, sound, and writing.

By connecting to, and being with, internal sensations, a bodily felt sense of an experience is given space to unfold and bring more understanding to the lived context and provide the next growth step forward.

Both Process Work and Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy are mindfulness-based and require no previous experience in art making; they can be referred to as low skill–high sensitivity. Being sensitive to, and aware of, what is emerging in the art is considered to more essential than expertise or experience with art media or modalities. Process-related image making provides a concrete representation of feeling states that can then be further explored for meaning.
